There was a man who was lost in the jungle. All the water he had got for his journey was over. He could find no river or even a small pool to quench his thirst. He went without water for quite a while, he was dying of thirst and this condition kept getting worse with time. Suddenly he saw a deserted house, and just outside it was a water pump. He began pumping furiously, but to no avail. Suddenly he noticed a small pitcher and a lid kept above the pump with a note written on the side which read: “You first got to stimulate the pump with water, my friend! Then fill the pitcher back before you leave.” He took the lid off and saw that the pitcher was full of water.
The man became confused. He started thinking to himself should he pour it down the pump? What if it didn’t work? All the water would be gone. What if he drank all the water instead of pouring it down the pump? That way he would not die of thirst. Then he thought about the note was this note just written for fun? What if it is true?
What do you think the man did?

and CLICK HERE to know what the man did
he pour water in the pump
Do acc to the note
Why there is only one pitcher, cannot someone place more bottles or bowls, while visiting this deserted house, So that next visitor can get benefit of it.
I would have done exactly as advised.. mnawazish
That would be wise 🙂
the man must pour the water and follow the instructions in the note, to do otherwise, he will be a complete loser
One must follow the instructions, he found that bag filled, so either he should follow the instructions or leave the bag as it is.
J.
I would follow the note!
For the pitcher to become full of water once is a miracle enough.
In such a situation we should follow such obviously guiding instructions.
Dear Readers, thank you very much for all your answers. You are all right from your respective points of view.
Indeed, it was a decision full of risk at a time when the man was dying of thirst. Nonetheless, he chose to follow the instructions on the note and poured the whole pitcher of water down the rusty old pump and fiercely pumped up and down. After few rounds of pumping up and down, the water gushed out of the pump, and the man was delighted to see that. He drank from it, and then filled the pitcher full and added a few words towards the end of the note which read, “This mechanism really works, you just got to trust and believe!”
Moral: Sometimes, it is very important to give away all that we have in order to get something back. And to do this we only need to have “conviction” that we will get something back.
Maybe the pitcher contained just the amount of water required for priming the pump. If the man had drunk a little water from it maybe it would have been insufficient for priming the pump thereby leaving the man die of thirst and no water for other travellers who would later reach the place in search of water.
No matter what, always remember “GIVING IS IMPORTANT !!!”
Drink some to quench his thirst. More thn half the water he pours in pump to prime the pump and pump furiously to get more water. Drink as much as he wants, fill his water reserves for journey. Then fill the pitcher back. Then write a new note ” Dated 25.10.2013- With less than half of water in the pitcher quench your thirst. With remaining half u need to pump furiously and pour water in pump to make the pump work. Open the house and replenish water inside other pitchers and write a similar note. Close the door behind and the man can be back on his journey yet again.
He should try half-and-half.
How can you say half the pitcher of water will suffice the priming of the pump ? 🙂
the man should quench his thirst with little water, thereafter oblige the instruction
He should drink first to quench his thirst.
he poured it in the pump
Take a little bit of water for drinking and put the rest in the pump
FIRST HE MUST QUENCH HIS THIRST,THEN DO WHAT EVER NOTE SAYS.
I do not know what the man should do, but god forbid if I should ever need water, i would like to thank all those people who explained how the pump works, I have never seen these pumps in my life, so I would quench my thirst first and then pour the rest of the water into the pump.
That’s a good thing, but what if the entire water in the pitcher was need to prime the pump ? Please check my recent comment. 🙂
follow the instruction
filled the pump first .
We have hand pumps in almost all the homes of our parental town & it is common practice that when ever unattended for few days these hand pumps doesn’t give water. So in order to make them work,we pour water in the pump tube(Pipe) & then pump the handle. So That is the truth, solution & trust placed in such situation. One thing which very occassional can happen.-If the leather pump piston has worn out then all the water poured in tube is wasted.
I will recommend that some water should be consumed for drinking & remaining poured in the pump.
He would do as advised.
I think that the man should what is written on the paper.
I think he will drink water and won’t take a chance!!!!!!!!!
But someone came there before and made it!!!!!!!!!!
At first, he quenches his thirst with little. Then,he uses some to pump the water.
Pour water down pump, this is called priming.
You are absolutely right. The mechanism is called Priming the pump
Pour water down pump. Prime the pump so it will work.
The man will fill the hand pump with the water available, it actually happens in the desert of Thar, Sind Pakistan.
Since the water jug is full and has not dried out, trust that somebody has just left it there for you in that desert, which means, what the instruction says is true.
the man would poured the water in the pump first then it will start working. drink water and fill the pitcher again and keep it for the other passer by.
Follow instructions and leave all in Allah’s hands.
Well it is quite unlikely that this situation arises. There is a crucial thing left to chance here. What THAT man did or not is not the matter. (I would fill the pump btw, NOT drink the water). What matters is that the owners of the well cannot leave it to fate or faith to get further supplies of water.
Above one is right, probably go hit the door and get help.
He knocked on the door to the house and asked the people who lived there what he should do.
Dear, All
I beleive absolutely the note was a sincere one since the jug is full with water, because who ever wrote the note had not to fill the jug with water. Also let us assume that the liqiud in the jug is not a drinkable one of water. So our Guy must follow the note as it is and avoid acting with sulfishness to assure his life. Thanks
I am uncertain what the man might have done since there are choices.
If he is a Pessimistic then he might have drank the whole water in the Pitcher & left nothing for the other passers which would be unethical.
If he is an Optimistic like me then he should have poured the water in the pitcher to pump it to quench his thirst & refill the pitcher for the other passers in the future.
I conclude with a quote from ? Winston Churchill
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
The wise action to trust the note, accordingly to pour the water in the
Pump, cosiquently shall be having
Positive result.
Apart from the above, if I were in his
Place, shall keep little water for moisturing
The lips, as it is dangerous to drink quantity of water by dying of thirst.
He thought for a while and then he did what he had to do according to the written note, he put the water in the pump first and the pump started to work when he pumped.
He drank all the water he could drink and then he filled the pitcher up for someone like himself.
He should drink all the water, wait until he needs to pee.
He pees in the pitcher and pour it in the pump to get it work.
I know a little disgusting but in such situations, life is much important.
He must pour all the water down the pump , beacuse if he did not he will drik once
and face the die and prevent others to have a chance finding water from this pump .
I am uncertain what the man did…but let us base it on general human nature…
In general…people have little faith or confidence in what others say…and generally assume others have bad intensions…. and generally…unfortunately in our day and age….selfishness is the order of the day and people more pften than note exhude narcissistic behaviour….based on this…I believe the man would simply drink the pitcher of water….assuming it was a hoax and assuming he was too selfish and in too much of a hurry to be considerate of the next traveller needing water..
That is not true in all places my friend. In some places people assume that it is he truth. I depends on where you are. Just like in some places people sleep with their doors unlocked and in other places they sleep with bars on their windows.
of course it is not true in all places Mohammed…..the same could be said for just about any statement in this life…but for those who belive we should not generalize…I guesse we should respond…then we probably should not speak….since almost every statement is in some way a generality….I do understadn your point though…your trying to say that the world is not that bad a place….ok…but you have not walked a mile in my shoes…nor I in yours…..I have many frinds that live in Gazza and I can assure you…they often have a very bleak vision of the future…unfortunately/fortunatel.. 🙂 …the world is full of extremes in both directions…and thank God…this provides us with well needed balance…..I have had the opportunity to life in many different regions in my life….from America, to North Africa to the Middle East….well just about every Middle East country….and I have found…..it is probably best to lock your door everywhere you live…..as Mohammed (PBUH) tells us…it is best to tie the camel….
regards
I don’t know what the man did, but if I were him, I will trust the instruction given in the note, knowing that some pumps need to be primed to work. I may just sip a bit of the water in the pitcher to reduce the intensity of my thirst, but I will pour much of the water into the pump in the hope that I can have enought to quench my thirst as well as refill the pitcher as directed in the note.
He pour the water in the pump
drink the water in the jug
