Where is the other Dollar?

Three friends go to a hotel. The man at the desk says the room is $30, each man pays $10 and go to the room.

A while later the clerk realizes the room is $25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys room with $5.

On the way the bellboy cant figure out how to split $5 evenly between 3 guys, so he gave each of them $1 and kept the other 2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 guys paid $9 a piece, which is a total of $27, add the $2 that the bellboy kept equals $29.

WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

according to the 25 the correct price for the room so, 25/3=8.33333 plus the one SR returned by the bellboy = 8.33333+1=9.3333333
multiply by 3 = 28 plus the two SR taken by the bellboy =30

Original charge was $30, but the revised charge was $25. So the calculation is based on the revised charge and not the original charge. The room hiring costs the friends $27.00 which was $2 more than the revised charge which was pocketed by the bellboy.

Paid 30 Dollar (i.e. each friend paid 10 Dollar)
Return 3 Dollar (Thus revised paid rent each friend by 9 Dollar)
    Paid by each friend = 3 * 9 = 27 Dollar
The Distribution of 27 Dollar = Room Rent (25 Dollar) + Bell Boy Retained (02 Dollars)

      Stupid Question!
$27 includes 25$ for rent & $2 kept by bell boy, 3$ he returned to 3 frnds
So no question of any missing Dollar

  4. akbar September 16, 2013 at 11:41 AM #

the guys think that they paid 27$ 9+9+9=27.
but the actual payment is 25$ not 27$.
so 25$ actual payment + 3$ return back to guys + 2$ with the bell boy.
    there is no missing 1$.

Hammad ur Rehman Abbasi’s comment is more appealing. I go with him!

    the three friend paid $ 27 ( 30-3 )
    $ 25 for the room

    Boys paid 27 $
    25 $ to Hotel and 2 $ to belboy

  12. Ibrahim January 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM #

The other dollar is with the hotel. the 3 dollar that would have made the 30 dollar is share by the hotel 8×3=24 1 and the bellboys 2.

    The customers paid 25+3=$28
    Bellboy got $2
This therefore totals up to 30

Too much time, resources and energy have already been wasted on this childish story, by many many people..
The bell-boy benetitted less than a dollar from each one of the 3 clients. It is out of question to assume that each one sacrificed one dollar.
IJay has done the right calculation.

    Actual payment is 27

    To Hotel 25

    To Bellboy 02

    Very simple. but foolish question

      Congratulation

      • nizamhm1944 February 6, 2013 at 9:26 AM #

        Thank you.

In other way The excess payment of five dollars was shared among three friends one each and the remained two dollars paid to the boy.

    stupid question

  17. Hammad ur Rehman Abbasi July 24, 2012 at 12:54 AM #

Their is only miss calculation due to which 1$ is missing.

See three men paid 30$… Clerk returned 5$ with bellboy…
    It makes 30$ – 5$ = 25$
Now bellboy returned three men 1$ each…
    It makes 25$ + 3$ = 28$
    & finally bellboy took 2$ to himself…
    It makes 28$ + 2$ = 30$… (Balanced)

    IN the $25!!!

  19. aamir shabbir April 25, 2010 at 9:14 PM #

That silly conflict!!!!! I hated it since a taxi driver told it to me, it’s wrong not the dollar because you should – 2$ not +.
    30$ in cash
    5$ to bellboy
    = 25$ in cash
    + 2$ with the bellboy
    = 27$
+ 3$ with the three men
    = 30$ ———————— COOOOOOOOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEECT 10000%
so DON”T JUST THROW SILLY JOKES AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Ijay July 21, 2012 at 2:13 PM #

i think the question doesnt sum up well: if out of 30, 5 bucks is sent back and if the bellboy gives $1 to each of the 3, then the total will 25+3 which equals to 28, and the remaining 2 is with the bellboy; so the money is balanced which is 30 $. there is no question of the 1$ missing according to this question.

        • ather August 11, 2013 at 2:56 PM #

if u are talking about equal distribution then its the missing cent ?

the bellboy returns 1$ each to the guys 25$ with hotel 3 each back to them that’s a total of 28$ divide by 3 equals 9.33$ person

          9.33$ X 3 equals 27.99

          2$pocketed by the bellboy

          Total 27.99$

          • ali June 23, 2017 at 12:59 PM #

            why you guys mixed up….

25$ is the revised Room Cost (clrk return $5 out of $30)
            its simple 25 room cost + 5 return ( 3 clients + 2 wth bellboy) = 30 total

in other way on the basis of revised cost

Three friends paid $9 each (9*3=27) that is for $25 room cost and 2 for bellboy.
thats it……. nothing else .. Thanks
