One day Sara and Farah were walking on the shore of river Nile in Egypt
when they noticed a pole stuck in the middle of the river.
They went up to a house nearby and enquired about that pole.
The resident of the house told them that the pole was one-half in the
ground. The other one-third of it was covered by water, and the
remaining part of the pole is above the water which is about 11 feet.

What is the total length of the pole in feet ?

    i dont understand how some people get 33 feet, 55 feet etc

  2. muhammadakbarmy April 12, 2014 at 12:54 PM #

    simple mathematics

  3. abmalik49 April 12, 2014 at 3:52 AM #

    1 = 1/2 + 1/3 + x
    1 = 5/6 + x
    Therefore, x = 1 – 5/6
    x = 1/6 which is equivalent to 11 ft
    If 1/6 = 11; 5/6 = 11 in 5 places = 55
    Total length of Pole is 55 + 11 = 66 ft

    Simple but logical. 🙂

  8. Saad April 11, 2014 at 1:23 PM #

    The portion which is visible is 1/6 of the total length.

    Let x be the total length of the pole.
    Since 1/6 * x = 11
    so, x = 66 feet.

  9. Ahsan Khan April 11, 2014 at 11:15 AM #

    Suppose total length of pole is x. Then equation is
    x=(1/2 x)+(1/3 x) + 11
    x=(0.5 x)+(0.33 x) + 11
    11= x- 0.5 x- 0.33 x
    11 = x- 0.83 x
    11 = 0.17 x
    x = 11/0.17
    x= 64.7 ft
    Total length of pole is 65 ft approx

  10. sabri April 11, 2014 at 8:54 AM #

    11=( x- x\2 -x\3 )
    * 6
    66 = 6x -3x -2x
    66 = x Length of bot

  11. Nirmala April 11, 2014 at 8:52 AM #

    x = 1/2x + 1/3x + 11

    = 0.5x + 0.33x + 11

    x – 0.5x – 0.33x = 11

    x – 0.83x = 11

    0.17x = 11

    x = 11/ 0.17 = 64.7 = 65 feet

    it simple

  18. muhammadakbarmy April 10, 2014 at 9:39 PM #

    The answer is 66 feet

  19. yaseer April 10, 2014 at 9:23 PM #

    (1/2)+(1/3)+x=1
    X=1-(1/2)-(1/3)
    X=1/6

    Also x = 11 feet.

    Therefore total length = 11 X 6 = 66 feet

  23. Ahmad April 10, 2014 at 5:49 PM #

    66 feet

  24. sameer April 10, 2014 at 5:13 PM #

    The answer is definitley 66 feet

    1/2(of the total pole length) under ground plus 1/3(of the total pole length) under water equals 5/6(of the total pole length) the remaining is 1/6(of the total pole length) above the water = 11 feet. Assuming that the total pole length is X.
    if 1/6 X = 11 then X =11*6 = 66

    It is simple mathmatics

  25. Samser April 10, 2014 at 4:54 PM #

    11 feet = 2/3 + 1/3 = 5.5 total = 16.5 feet, which represents half. the other half is 16.5 , hence total = 33 feet.

  26. khalid April 10, 2014 at 4:38 PM #

    66 feet

  29. Idrees April 10, 2014 at 2:44 PM #

    66 feet is the total length of pole.
    33 feet in ground, 22 feet in water and 11 feet above water.

  30. Abdul Waheed April 10, 2014 at 2:29 PM #

    Half in the ground + one third in the water = 5/6 already counted for leaving 1/6 which equals to 11 feet + 5/6 will equal to 55 feet making the total length of the pole 66 feet.

    66 FEET

  31. Ali April 10, 2014 at 2:29 PM #

    Yes Lubna you are absolutely right now. I appreciate your effort.

    • lubna April 10, 2014 at 2:46 PM #

      thank

  32. Abdul Waheed April 10, 2014 at 2:29 PM #

    Half in the ground + one third in the water = 5/6 already counted for leaving 1/6 which equals to 11 feet + 5/6 will equal to 55 feet making the total length of the pole 66 feet.

  33. lubna April 10, 2014 at 2:28 PM #

    1/5=0.5 and 1/3=0.333 we add both 0.5+0.333=0.8333 then 1-0.8333=0.1667
    if we suppose total length is X
    then 0.1667*x=11 feet
    x=11/0.1667=65.987 feet

  34. lubna April 10, 2014 at 2:20 PM #

    1/2=0.5 and 1/3=0.333 then 0.5+0.333=0.833 if we round it then we take 0.8 but it there will be great effect on total length in case of feet and inches question we will take whole value and subtract from 1 then 1-0.8333=0.1667 now we suppose total length of pole in feet is =X
    then
    * X=11 feet
    x=11/0.1667=65.987 feet if u round it then it will be 66 feet

  35. ABDUL KHALIQ April 10, 2014 at 2:20 PM #

    33 ft.

  36. Kamran Latif April 10, 2014 at 2:17 PM #

    The correct answer is 66 feet. Lubna shall go back to primary school to learn the basics of maths.

  37. Hussain April 10, 2014 at 2:16 PM #

    11 feet divided by 2 equals 5.5
    So the third left in the water is 5.5
    Which in total gives 16.5 above the ground and 16.5 in the ground and a grand total of
    33

  38. Rifqah April 10, 2014 at 2:04 PM #

    Total length of the pole is 66 feet

    66 feet

  40. lubna April 10, 2014 at 1:30 PM #

    but exact ans is 55 feet because one half is 0.5 and one third is 0.3.when we will total the 0.5+.03=0.8 then 0.8 is part of 1 so we will minus 0.8 from total part 1 then 1-0.8=0.2
    so 0.2 is remaining part which is equal to 11 feet.if 0.2=11 feet hence 0.8 will be equal to 44 feet. so total length of the pole is 55 feet

  41. lubna April 10, 2014 at 1:30 PM #

    but exact ans is 55 feet because one half is 0.5 and one third is 0.3.when we will total the 0.5+.03=0.8 then 0.8 is part of 1 so we will minus 0.8 from total part 1 then 1-1-0.8=0.2
    so 0.2 is remaining part which is equal to 11 feet.if 0.2=11 feet hence 0.8 will be equal to 44 feet. so total length of the pole is 55 feet

  42. lubna April 10, 2014 at 1:25 PM #
