Can You Solve The Great Mystery??

Two friends have dinner in a restaurant, and the bill is $45.

The friends pay $25 each, which the waiter gives to the restaurant Manager.

The restaurant Manager hands back $5 to the waiter.

The Waiter keeps $3 as a tip and hands back $1 each.

So, the friends paid $24 each for the meal, for a total of $48. The Waiter has $3, and that makes $51.

Where did the other dollar come from??

    this is not Great Mystery, this is Great Stupid Mystery.
    the gays paid only $45 for meal, they got back $2 which gives a total of $47 and $3 for the waiter
    45/2=22.5 and not 24

  2. Hammam November 30, 2011 at 12:07 PM #

    The mistake is to add the 3$ again to the 48$ while they are already a part of them, all what we can add are the 2$ to the 48$< we get the right 50$

  3. Mudassir November 30, 2011 at 12:05 PM #

    If
    we divided bill on two person = 45/2 = 22.5 each

    Waiter
    give them 2 rupees = 1 for each = 22.5+1 = 23.5 each

    And
    now add 23.5 + 23.5 = 47

    And
    waiter take 3 rupees as tip = 47+3= 50

    45 m, Each 22.5*2=45
    25-22.5=2.5 Each 2.5*2=5
    2.5-1=1.5 Each 2*1.5=3
    1 Each 2*1=2
    45+3+2=50
    this is Mathematics you can play with,

  5. Gopinath November 30, 2011 at 10:42 AM #

    They paid 24 $ each   so total they paid is 48$ instead of 45 $. So 48 – 45 = 3 $ as tip. So no extra 1 $ here. This is as simple as that.

    the total the paid 50
    the restaurant manager return 5$
    so the meal cost $ 45
    plus $ 2 from the $ 5 with the waiter ( 45+ 2 = 47 ) + $ 3 with the waiters equals $ 50
    the the rule is (Addition and subtraction precede multiplication and division in math)
    thanks very much

    look at the $3 as part of the $48 that they paid , not as part of the $50.
    that means, they both paid $48, part of this amount are the $3.
    so each paid $24: $22.5 for the meal and $1.5 as a tip

  10. Isandoqa November 30, 2011 at 9:32 AM #

    suppose that the amount payed by the two friends is (x)
    x = 50
    x = 45 + 5
    x -2 = 45 + 3

    so (3) still at the right side as positive, you moved it to the left side as positive also and that is the wrong>>>>
    complete…
    x – 2 – 3 = 45
    x – 5 = 45
    that is right….
    thank you….

    This is very old mathematics and cant solve. Many people coment each paid 23.50 how comes? 25 each they paid and waiter has given back 1$ each. This $1 will in excess so far no one can give right answer.

  12. Muhammad Wasim November 30, 2011 at 9:28 AM #

    its not a great mystery..

  13. Ahmedhanan75 November 30, 2011 at 9:16 AM #

    each one paid 22.5 $ for meal
    AND the tip = 3 so each the waiter took 1.5 $ as tip from each one
    AND the waiter gave every one 1 $ in return
    So the total sum for every one = 22.5 + 1.5 + 1 = 25 $ that had from start
    & total amount of money = 25 + 25 = 50 $

  15. adebola oke November 30, 2011 at 9:11 AM #

    THE TWO FRIENDS PAID $22.5 EACH ie $45/2=$22.5

    SO IR IS LIKE THIS  $22.5 *2+$2+$3=$50

  16. Muhammad Ahmad Malik November 30, 2011 at 9:10 AM #

    The statement that the two friends paid 24$ each for the meal is incorrect (if you exclude the tip).

    Actually each person paid 22.5$ for the meal totaling 45$. Add the 3$ tip for the waiter and we have a total of 48$ for the bill. Add the 2$ the 2 friends got back. We have 50$ in total and not 51$ as stated in the question..

    So the actual problem statement is incorrect and misleading.

  17. wael semrein November 30, 2011 at 9:08 AM #

    no need for solve it, it solves itself..

  18. Mutlaq M. Qanah November 30, 2011 at 9:05 AM #

    Each one of the friends has paid $ 23.5 + $ 1.5 as a tip. That makes the total of $ 25 each; multiplied by 2 = $ 50 and not $ 51.

  19. Ramy14591 November 30, 2011 at 9:04 AM #

    each one paid $24 including the tip…since they should pay $45 for their meal and then another $3 as a tip therefore the total is $48…so don’t add $3 to the $48 because they are part from $48

  20. Mutlaq M Qanah November 30, 2011 at 9:00 AM #

    In fact each one Has paid 23.5 + 1.5 as a tip x 2 = 50 and not 51.

  21. Latheefpp November 30, 2011 at 8:48 AM #

    I will mention one more funny calculation like this.

    3 friends took $10 each and had food for$ 25
    they got balance $5 and from that they gave $2 to waiter
    and from  the balance $3, they took $ 1 each.

    Now the cost of food comes $9*3=27 plus tip $2, total $29 only.
    Where is missing $1?

    • Faiz November 30, 2011 at 9:32 AM #

      Hi Latheef, this is exactly the Orignal question many year, the Bove one is like Old wine in new Bottle, both will have no answer.

      • Faraz Mohammed Syed November 30, 2011 at 4:18 PM #

        of course there is an answer, check above

  22. Engmshamma November 30, 2011 at 8:42 AM #

    the 3 $ is already calculated in the 48 $

  23. ASAALI9330 November 30, 2011 at 8:39 AM #

    THE TOTAL PAYMENT WAS $ 50.00 NOT 51.00 AS STATED .

    $ 45.00 FOR THE FOOD
    $   3 .00 FOR THE WAITER
    $    2 .00 CHANGE REFUND $ 1.00 FOR EACH OF THEM .

    TOTAL $ 50.00

  24. Latheefpp November 30, 2011 at 8:37 AM #

    Restaurant Bill = 45
    Tip to waiter     =  3
    Cost of the Food=48
    The amount paid = 50
    Balance            = 2 (with them)

    The money given to waiter must add to the cost of food and it can’t be treat as balance.
    The balance is only 2 which with the friends.

  25. Emadkandah November 30, 2011 at 8:30 AM #

    its just a matter of doing calculations in a wrong way
    when the waiter got $5 back then every one had paid $22.2
    and when the waiter took $3 then every one has paid $24 and when he gave them $1 each they have paid $24 each including tip

  26. Imad Kayyali November 30, 2011 at 8:23 AM #

    The question is misleading, yes they paid the 48 but this is including the 45 for the meal and the 3 with the waiter, this is how the 48 is summing up, the remaining is the 2 that they were given back by the waiter to make the 50.

  27. Abu Osama November 30, 2011 at 8:17 AM #

    The $3 taken by the waiter are included in the $48 paid the two friiends and the right equation is:
    24+24- 3= 45 wich is the bill value

  28. Ghaffar Mirza November 30, 2011 at 8:08 AM #

    You can only solve this problem in one direction. ie. either backwards or forwards but by mixing two you will never get the answer.  For example if both fiends paid 24 each than they only paid 48, so what is the fuss. Trying to solve backwards is also same that the manager kept 45 out 50 and returned 5 out of which 3 kept by waiter and two returned. that makes.$50.  You are mixing forward and backward questions to achieve the correct answer and that will never give you the right answer.

    They paid total 48, out of which 45 are with manager and rest of them i,e 3 is kept by waiter so acording the methamatical equation

    Friends = manager + wiater
    48 = 45+3

    so there is no question of getting this figure to 51…

    actuali 25$ each means 25*2=50$
    waiter hands over 5$,and from it he keeps 3 $ as a tip…and 1$ each means 1*2=2$

    so here the game iz over…..

  36. Negash November 30, 2011 at 7:44 AM #

    They paid $25 each a total of = $50   look the breakdown below :

    –  Food cost                 =  $45
    –  Tips                          =  $  3
    –  Change                    =  $  2
                                        ______
    – Total                         = $50

    nothing extra or lost it is just the way the question presented.

  37. Mubarek Alamin85 November 30, 2011 at 7:43 AM #

    it’s not 51 dollar,
    the charge was 45 dollar,
    if the customers pays 48 dollar,
    their change is 3 dollar,
    in which the waiter ought to have,
    subtracted from the actual payment of 50 dollar dived by 25 = 2 friends
    which profits the restaurant 48 dollar in between the waiters and services of 45+3=51 dollars in your bun bun `~`

    What a Bullshit.. it is neither a mystery nor it is great in any sense.

    The writer of this filth thinks we all are fools like him/herself.

    • xoxoxo from Canada December 1, 2011 at 1:20 AM #

      Calm down u retard. If its such filth then y r u reading it in the first place? Its obviously a riddle so there will probably be some weird twist to it. Just because you can’t figure it out doesn’t mean that the writer is stupid. Infact it actually makes them CLEVER.

      and btw its ‘What Bullshit’. Not ‘ What A Bullshit’. You obviously don’t know real english.
      Go read a dictionary hon.

        First thing I just wrote my comment and never asked any opinion to that (May be it was you who wrote this crap and that’s the reason you felt so bad about my comment ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha….), second thing, by trying to point out my mistake, eventually you yourself showed what you yourself is who actually don’t understand any English in a better way but still tries to point out other’s mistakes where there is no such mistake and with that you yourself makes big mistakes and shows to the world what you yourself actually are, but don’t worry, as you can clearly see that all others out here are not stupid fools like you and that’s the reason no one else said anything as yet because they are actually CLEVER enough to understand what I have written and what kind of FILTHS you came up with having no real sense but reflecting your small cheap mentality and lack of knowledge, and last thing is that I don’t take actual retards like you that seriously, I just laugh at them ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha….

    The $3 that is with waiter is from the friends. What they paid together was $48 instead of meal of $45.

    THE 48 DOLLARS INCLUDES THE THREE DOLLARS

  42. Alam November 30, 2011 at 7:10 AM #

    Bill is still 45, since the guys paid 1.5 x 2 = 3 to the waiter and
    received a return of 1 so each paid 22.5 x 2= 45  (1.5 to waiter each = 3
    and got 1 back = 2) = 50

  43. Kishta1 November 30, 2011 at 7:06 AM #

    The $48 includes the food price which is $45 + $3 tips = $48
    When you say that each person paid $24 than means he paid for his food and tips together.
