Oh! That’s not my wife – A True Story !

One day my wife and I went to Wal-Mart to do some shopping. As we entered the store, my wife took a shopping basket from the basket area and insisted that she push the cart basket because she wanted some items other than the dog food which I needed to get for our dog.

As we proceeded down the aisle, I glanced back and my wife was following me with the shopping cart. When I reached the dog food area, I started checking out the prices of the dog food and talking out loud to my wife as I could see her through my peripheral vision while I was checking out the dog food. Without looking at her, I said, “Honey, I think I will get the dog some of these Milk Bone Treats. She had not responded, but I was so focused on which dog food and treats to buy that I never looked directly at my wife. I then picked up a box of Milk Bone and again without looking, I reached backwards and placed the box of Milk Bone in my wife’s shopping cart. I then said lets go down a little further so I can get a big bag of dog food. As I walked to the bags of dog food a little further down the aisle, I could see the shopping cart following behind me, again through my peripheral vision.

All this time I was talking to my wife about what and why I was buying certain items without looking directly at her. I then picked up a 50 lb bag of dog food and turned around without looking up and placed the bag of dog food in the shopping cart behind me. As I looked up at my wife, I said, “Honey, did you already get what you came shopping for?” As my eyes came into contact with the lady pushing the shopping cart, I was astonished at how my wife looked very different. I immediately realized that the lady pushing the shopping cart behind me all this time while I was mumbling was not my wife.

I was so embarrassed that I immediately grabbed the bag of dog food and other item I had placed in the shopping cart and started apologizing to the lady. She began to laugh and tell me that it was ok and insisted on me leaving the items in the shopping cart and she would continue pushing it for me. I was extremely embarrassed and began explaining that at one point my wife was following me with her shopping cart and I never looked up again and just assumed that it was my wife behind me all this time. The Lady laughed and then told me a story when she was standing in line one time a man turned around and hugged her before realizing she was not his wife. We became friends while telling each other our embarrassing stories. I then thanked her for pushing the shopping basket for me and then left.

Moral of the Story
Always look at your wife when speaking to her.
